Kigali, Rwanda
Cultural area with street art and nightlife. Good for daytime tours, sketchy at night - always take motos.
Nyamirambo is the center of Kigali's Muslim community and one of the more diverse areas. Markets stay open late, street art on walls, bars and clubs go later than elsewhere. You'll hear different languages, see women in traditional kitenge and modern clothes, get unfiltered local Rwandan life. The area mostly avoided the 1994 genocide because of its diverse Muslim population. During the day it's interesting for cultural tours - local shops, the main mosque, artisans. People are friendly. Safety drops significantly after dark though. Daytime is fine with crowds around, but at night there are poorly lit side streets and less police presence than upscale areas. Visit for daytime culture, take a moto back to other neighborhoods rather than walking after 10pm.
