Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Singapore

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Singapore.

Summary

The hawker food district with cheap, authentic meals and heritage temples. Safe and local, though hot and crowded.

Details

Chinatown has the hawker food scene. The Chinatown Complex Food Centre has over 260 stalls - you can get Michelin-recognized chicken rice for $3.50 or claypot rice cooked over charcoal. It's hot, crowded, and more authentically local than the tourist areas. At hawker centers, you reserve a table by leaving tissues on it (called 'choping'), then order from different stalls. The main streets like Pagoda and Smith have souvenir shops and some cafes, but the side streets feel more real. It's safe day and night, though things close down after 10pm when the hawker stalls shut. You'll hear more Mandarin and Chinese dialects here, though English works fine. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Sri Mariamman Temple are worth seeing - just cover your shoulders and knees.
