Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Singapore

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Singapore.

About Singapore

This page may contain affiliate links.

  • Singapore has very low crime rates and feels safe to walk around at any hour. The public transport (MRT) runs until 1am and connects most areas you'd want to visit. Everyone speaks English since it's an official language, which makes getting around straightforward.
  • The heat and humidity hit hard year-round (77-88°F) but everything indoors is heavily air-conditioned. Hawker centers are where locals eat - you can get good meals for $3-5, and eating alone is common.
  • The city enforces strict laws: no chewing gum sales, jaywalking fines, littering penalties. These contribute to the cleanliness but can feel excessive.
  • Neighborhoods vary: Marina Bay has the tourist landmarks, Chinatown has the hawker food culture, Little India gets crowded and you might get stared at more, and Tiong Bahru is where the cafes and bookstores are. The MRT gets you between them easily.

Don't Learn These Lessons the Hard Way

Some mistakes you only make once in Singapore. But you shouldn't have to make them at all. This free checklist reveals the 5 safety pitfalls that catch solo women off guard — so you can avoid them before they happen.

Safe Areas
  • Marina Bay
  • Orchard Road
  • Clarke Quay
  • Robertson Quay
  • Tiong Bahru
  • Kampong Glam
  • Chinatown
  • Sentosa Island
Areas to Avoid
  • Little India (late night, especially weekends)
  • Geylang (red light district)
  • Mustafa Centre surroundings (late night)
Language & Communication

English is an official language and universally spoken. Emergency services (999, 995) have English-speaking operators. Tourist Information Hotline (1800-736-2000) operates in English Monday-Friday 9am-6pm. Other official languages are Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil, but English will get you everywhere.

Cultural Tips
  • English is an official language, so communication is easy. You'll hear Singlish (local English with Malay/Chinese words mixed in) which sounds different but you'll adjust.
  • Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples and mosques. Otherwise, casual clothes are fine, though locals tend to dress smart-casual. Bring a light jacket because the air conditioning indoors is intense.
  • Don't tip - a 10% service charge is already in most bills. Some places have signs saying no tipping.
  • The strict laws are enforced on tourists too: littering ($300 fine), jaywalking ($50), smoking outside designated areas ($200), chewing gum (banned except medical gum from pharmacies). They're serious about this.
  • People queue for everything - MRT doors, hawker stalls, shop entrances. Cutting in line will get you glared at.
  • Eating alone is normal here. You'll see people dining solo everywhere, and many places have counter seating or small tables set up for it.
Getting Around
  • The MRT subway runs 5:30am to 1am and is clean and reliable. You can tap your credit card or phone directly at the gates - no special card needed. Rides cost $0.80-2.50.
  • Buses use the same tap-to-pay system as the MRT. They're reliable but the routes can be confusing if you're new. Google Maps helps with planning. Service drops off after 11pm.
  • Grab (like Uber) works well for late nights or areas the MRT doesn't reach. GrabShare is cheaper if you don't mind carpooling. Regular taxis are metered and safe, just cost a bit more than Grab.
  • You can walk around individual neighborhoods, but the heat and humidity (often 80%+) make long walks draining. Most people take the MRT and walk short distances. The city center has underground walkways between buildings, which are air-conditioned.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

  • For shorter trips, VisitorsCoverage is a good option.
  • For long-term travel or remote work, we recommend Ekta.
Best Time to Visit
  • February to April has the least rain and slightly lower humidity, though it's still hot (77-88°F).
  • November through January are the wettest months - expect nearly 20 rainy days and heavy downpours in December.
  • August and September are a bit cooler and drier, and hotels are sometimes cheaper.
  • But really, Singapore is tropical year-round, so you're dealing with heat and humidity whenever you go.
