Haga

Haga is a good base or a day trip for anyone who wants a quiet, low-risk area for cafe-hopping. It gets crowded around midday and quiet early at night.

Haga is Gothenburg's oldest suburb, a small district of cobbled streets and preserved 19th-century wooden houses with half-sunken ground floors that now hold cafes, boutiques and design shops. It is known for oversized cinnamon buns and the fika culture that goes with them, and plenty of people sit alone at window tables with a book or laptop, so nobody notices a solo visitor. Haga Nygata, the main pedestrian street, is busy from morning until evening. It is well lit and calm after dark, but many shops close early in the evening and the streets empty out. The hill above the neighborhood leads to the Skansen Kronan fortress, which has city views. Staff speak fluent English and the area is easy to navigate on foot. Haga works better for daytime and early evening than for nightlife; for late drinks, Järntorget or Linnégatan is a five-minute walk.
