Masthugget and Järntorget have the busiest social scene in the city, with a relaxed, local crowd and good transport. It is safe, though weekend crowds can be loud and the residential streets uphill are darker at night.
Masthugget rises above the harbor between the river and Linnéstaden, topped by the red-brick Masthugget Church, and Järntorget at its foot is the social centre of the area. From the square, the parallel Långgatorna streets run out with pubs, bars, restaurants and independent shops, popular with students, musicians and young professionals. It is busy and friendly from lunchtime to late at night, and you will see other women out alone or with friends. Solo dining is easy, with plenty of casual places, bars with counter seats and cafes. On weekend nights Järntorget and Andra Långgatan can get loud with intoxicated groups, but incidents are usually minor. Several tram lines meet at Järntorget, so getting home is simple. Streets higher up toward the church are quiet, residential and dim at night.
