Taipei, Taiwan
Hot springs district 20 minutes from downtown. Good day trip for hot springs culture and museums, but isolated at night. Public hot springs closed for renovation until February 2026.
Taipei's hot springs area, the only metro-accessible hot spring district in Taiwan - 20 minutes from downtown. Day brings peaceful escape with steaming Thermal Valley (Hell Valley), Beitou Hot Spring Museum, and award-winning green library in lush greenery. Families and tourists explore parks and cultural sites during daylight. Important 2025 update: Beitou Park Outdoor Hot Spring Bathing Pool closed January 24, 2025 for major renovations, won't reopen until at least February 2026. Private hot spring hotels and spas still operate for onsen experience. Area around Xinbeitou MRT station and main hot springs park feels safe and tourist-friendly by day with English signage for international visitors. Evening changes things - day visitors leave, area gets empty and poorly lit outside main hotel zones. Not dangerous exactly, but you'll feel isolated walking around after dark. Visit as a day trip - morning or early afternoon for Thermal Valley and museums, maybe book private hot spring at a hotel, then return to central Taipei accommodation before evening. MRT makes this easy.

Built around Taiwan's largest night market with hundreds of food stalls and Michelin vendors. Crowds and police make it safe but watch for pickpockets. Quiet residential area beyond the market.
Youth and LGBTQ+ district with lots of shopping, street food, and nightlife. Safe and busy, good if you want energy and crowds. Weekends get packed.
