Taipei, Taiwan
Built around Taiwan's largest night market with hundreds of food stalls and Michelin vendors. Crowds and police make it safe but watch for pickpockets. Quiet residential area beyond the market.
Built around Shilin Night Market - the largest and most famous night market in Taiwan. Reopened April 2025 after major renovations to the underground food court. Enhanced facilities but kept the authentic atmosphere. Day brings quiet residential streets with families, then after 4pm over 539 food stalls start serving in the underground court alone. Four have Michelin Bib Gourmand awards. Carnival games area has better lighting than the dense food sections. Families with kids fill early evening (5-8pm), then teenagers and tourists take over past midnight. Crowds create safety through visibility but also prime pickpocketing conditions - several incidents with Japanese tourists reported in 2025. Keep bags zipped, phones secure. The 229-year-old Cixian Temple at the market's center offers escape from chaos. Everything targets tourists with English menu pictures and tourist prices. Jiantan Station (Red Line MRT) sits 5 minutes away, well-lit with police presence. Beyond the night market, Shilin has little for tourists except the National Palace Museum if you're into Chinese art and history.
