What Will You Do If...

Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.

Summary

Kampala's 24/7 party district. High energy, significant safety concerns late at night. Go in groups, use taxis constantly, stay alert. Not for first-time visitors or anyone prioritizing safety.

Details

Kabalagala is where Kampala parties. Bars and clubs run 24/7, crowds peak after 11pm and go until dawn. Young Kampalans come here to dance and drink - the atmosphere is high-energy but safety is lower than other areas. About 6km southeast of central Kampala. Everything from cheap beer joints to nicer lounges, plus street food vendors selling Rolex (chapati with eggs) late at night. During the day it's quiet and relatively safe, but transforms completely after sunset. Private security outside venues and some police around, but alcohol, crowds, and late hours create problems. Pickpocketing is common in venues. Take taxis everywhere - don't walk at night even short distances. You can meet people here easily, but go in groups if possible and watch your drinks and valuables closely. Not the place to go your first night in Kampala. Once you know the city better, it has real nightlife energy.
