About Kampala

This page may contain affiliate links.

  • Kampala spreads across seven hills near Lake Victoria at about 3,900 feet elevation. The traffic is terrible - what should be a 30-minute trip can easily take 2 hours during rush hour. People are friendly and used to foreign visitors, though English is much more common in upscale areas than in local neighborhoods.
  • The city splits into very different areas. Kololo and Nakasero have embassies, gated compounds, and heavy security - expensive but safe. Kabalagala has the party scene but gets sketchy after dark. In between, neighborhoods like Bugolobi and Ntinda offer more middle ground. Learning a few Luganda phrases helps, but you can get by with English in most places tourists go.
  • Tourist Police exist but don't count on them for much. Pickpocketing and phone snatching are common in markets and on public transport. Political tensions have been higher since the January 2026 elections - stay away from any political gatherings or rallies.
  • Boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest way through traffic, but they're also risky. Safer to use Uber, Bolt, or the SafeBoda app, especially at night. After dark, stick to well-lit areas with security like Kololo, Nakasero, or Muyenga.

Language & Communication

English is widely spoken in Kampala, especially in tourist areas, upscale neighborhoods, and by educated professionals. Luganda is the local language. Most people in the service industry, hotels, and restaurants speak English. Emergency services (112) have English-speaking operators. Tourist Police (122) can assist in English.

Cultural Tips
  • Dress more conservatively than you might in other cities - people here care about appearance and dress neatly. Women should cover knees and shoulders, especially outside tourist areas. The shorts-and-wrinkled-shirt backpacker look doesn't go over well.
  • Greetings matter. Shake hands (right hand only) and ask 'How are you?' before starting a conversation. Don't use your left hand to give or receive anything. Greet older people first as a sign of respect.
  • Most people in Kampala speak English, but a few Luganda phrases help: 'Oli otya?' (How are you?), 'Webale' (Thank you), 'Ssebo/Nnyabo' (Sir/Madam). People are generally helpful and friendly. Keep public displays of affection minimal.
Getting Around
  • Boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest way through the traffic, but they're also the riskiest. If you use them, stick to SafeBoda or Uber Boda apps for registered drivers. Don't use them at night or in areas you don't know.
  • Uber and Bolt work in central areas and are safer after dark. Regular taxis exist but you'll need to negotiate the fare upfront. Kampala got a formal bus system (Tondeka Metro) in 2025 with modern buses, but most people still use matatus - 14-seater minivans with blue stripes that run set routes.
  • You can walk in neighborhoods like Kololo and Nakasero during the day, but the hills and missing sidewalks make it harder than you'd expect. Don't walk anywhere alone after dark - even people who live in safe areas take taxis at night. Rush hour (7-9am and 5-8pm) is brutal - the 40km drive to Entebbe airport can take 3-4 hours.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • June to August is the driest period with temperatures around 79-84°F (26-29°C). Best weather for getting around.
  • December to February is also dry and usually less crowded than mid-year.
  • Skip March to May (long rains) and October to November (short rains) if you can - heavy downpours make the hilly streets harder to navigate and somehow make the traffic even worse. Being near the equator means temperatures stay fairly consistent year-round.
