Kampala, Uganda
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Kampala.
Hipster scene with live music, trendy bars, creative crowd. Safer than Kabalagala but still need caution at night. More authentic than diplomatic areas. Avoid northern Kamwokya slums completely.
Kisementi is part of the larger Kamwokya area. The name means 'the place of cement' from a 1930s market, but now it's where the hipster scene happens - trendy bars, live music, young creative types. Mix of young professionals, artists, and expats who want something less polished than the diplomatic areas. During the day it's a working neighborhood with offices, banks, supermarkets, and residential streets. Good foot traffic keeps it relatively safe. At night the music venues fill up with people who prefer live bands over DJs. More mature crowd than Kabalagala's party chaos. Private security at venues but not much police. Northern Kamwokya has slum areas - avoid those completely. Stick to the Kisementi entertainment strip and commercial areas. English is common at the mixed-crowd venues. Works for eating alone at the bars and restaurants. Close enough to Kololo for a quick taxi ride.
