Kampala, Uganda
Someone grabs your arm. A taxi goes off-route. A guy won't leave you alone. This free guide covers what to say and do.
Hilltop area with views, upscale residences, sophisticated dining. Safe and peaceful, international community. Far from city center so you need taxis for most trips. Works if you want luxury and don't worry about budget.
At 4,285 feet, Muyenga sits on one of Kampala's highest points - called 'Tank Hill' for the water tanks at the peak. Sometimes compared to Beverly Hills for being upscale. The elevation means panoramic views of the city and Lake Victoria, plus it's noticeably cooler than downtown. Senior politicians, business executives, and expats live in villas with gardens and greenery. Tree-lined streets, gated communities, sophisticated but relaxed feel - very different from the chaos below. Restaurants serve local and international food, trendy bars and lounges with views where professionals go after work. Safe to walk during the day because of private security and wealthy residents, but take taxis at night since it's spread out and hilly. English widely spoken with so many internationals. Main problem is distance - about 8km southeast of central Kampala, so traffic adds up. Good if you want peaceful, upscale base.

CBD and upscale residential area with offices, shopping, and dining. Safe during business hours with police presence, but empties out at night. Central location, good for day exploration.
Residential area that becomes a nightlife spot after dark. Live music venues, mixed local-expat crowd. Safer than Kabalagala but still need taxis at night. Less polished, more authentic vibe.
