Kampala, Uganda
What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Kampala.
Middle-class area with government officials and young professionals. Authentic Kampala life, good amenities, Ndere Cultural Centre for traditional performances. Safe during day, more affordable than upscale areas. Standard nighttime precautions.
Ntinda went from a small 1960s trading post to a middle-class neighborhood - nicknamed 'Ministers Village' because so many government officials live here. About 7km northeast of central Kampala. Mix of residential estates, shopping centers, local businesses. More balanced than other areas - not extreme poverty, not extreme wealth. Locals and some expats, practical amenities like supermarkets and banks. Ndere Cultural Centre hosts traditional dance and music performances regularly. Safe during the day with normal precautions, don't walk at night like most of Kampala. Matatus (minivans) and boda-bodas available, plus taxis. English spoken in shops and restaurants but you'll hear more Luganda than in diplomatic areas. Works for eating alone at restaurants and cafes. Less expensive than upscale areas, cleaner and safer than rough areas - middle ground. The Cultural Centre is worth visiting for traditional performances.
