Details

Just east of Waikiki, Kaimuki and Kapahulu are residential neighborhoods known for some of Honolulu's best local food. Waialae Avenue in Kaimuki has independent cafes, brunch places and cocktail bars, and Kapahulu Avenue has classic local spots like malasada bakeries, poke shops and shave ice. It's a way to get away from the resort crowd, eat well and see how people live. Both areas are quiet by day with relaxed local crowds, and busy restaurants keep the main streets active in the evening. Side streets are residential and can be dark and empty late at night, so take a rideshare rather than walking long distances after dark. Waikiki is a 20-30 minute walk away, or an easy bus ride.
