Summary

Waikiki is the most convenient and best-lit base in Honolulu, with a visible police presence, plenty of places to eat and drink alone, and easy transport. The main downsides are petty theft in crowded spots and high prices.

Details

Waikiki is the beachfront resort district where most visitors stay, and it's the easiest part of Honolulu for a woman on her own. Kalakaua Avenue and the side streets stay busy with shoppers, diners and street musicians well into the evening, hotels and shops keep things lit, and there's a police substation in the district. Eating alone is normal, whether at beach bars, food halls or hotel lounges. The crowds also draw pickpockets and people who grab bags left on the sand, so keep valuables on you or in a hotel safe. The far end of Kapi'olani Park, the Ala Wai canal path and the beach are quiet after dark and best skipped alone late at night. Hostels and hotels are everywhere, including several with female-only dorms, which makes it an easy first base. Expect high prices for food and rooms.
