ModeratePortuguese is the main language. English is common in hostels, hotels and tourist-facing venues but limited elsewhere, including with many drivers and on emergency lines. The Tourist Police (DPTur) units at the bus terminal and airport are set up to assist visitors. Save a translation app and your accommodation's address in Portuguese before going out.
The first hour after landing is when you're tired, carrying everything, and easiest to take advantage of. Three things to sort before you fly:
Your ride from the airport. A driver who meets you in arrivals, at a price fixed before you fly — no haggling at the taxi rank.
Book an airport pickupData the moment you land. Maps, ride apps and a way to call for help as soon as you switch your phone on. An eSIM installs at home.

Explore the different areas of Florianópolis and find the perfect neighborhood for your stay.
Lagoa da Conceição has the most food, bars and hostels on the island and is the easiest district for meeting other travelers. Days are easy and nights are busy, but because of drink spiking and theft around the bar strip, keep your drink close and ride home rather than walk.
Centro is worth a daytime visit for the market, historic square and bridge, and it is the transport hub of the island. It is quiet and less comfortable after dark, so most solo travelers sleep in the beach districts and visit by day.
Campeche is a residential surf district with a good range of food and a local feel. It works for a longer stay, though it is spread out and quiet at night, so use a ride app after dark.
Jurerê Internacional is the island's upscale resort district, with beach clubs, restaurants and visible security. It is pricey and seasonal, but it suits people who put low street crime ahead of a backpacker scene.
Barra da Lagoa is a compact fishing village with a surf beach. It is easy to walk by day and early evening, has a smaller scene than Lagoa da Conceição, and the paths are dark and empty late at night.
Santo Antônio de Lisboa is a small waterfront village known for oysters, seafood and sunset views. It feels safe in the early evening but is quiet at night, so plan your ride home.
