LowSinhala and Tamil are the main languages. English is widely spoken in Galle Fort, hotels and tourist restaurants, but less so in the new town, on buses and in local markets, so learn a few phrases or keep a translation app handy. The 119 police line is free from any phone, and the Tourist Police can help with complaints involving visitors.
The first hour after landing is when you're tired, carrying everything, and easiest to take advantage of. Three things to sort before you fly:
Your ride from the airport. A driver who meets you in arrivals, at a price fixed before you fly — no haggling at the taxi rank.
Book an airport pickupData the moment you land. Maps, ride apps and a way to call for help as soon as you switch your phone on. An eSIM installs at home.

Explore the different areas of Galle and find the perfect neighborhood for your stay.
Galle Fort is the simplest base in Galle: compact, walkable and full of cafes and guesthouses. The main things to watch are quiet streets late at night and tuk-tuk overcharging at the gates.
Galle Town is the busy local side of the city, useful for markets and transport. It's fine by day but has little for visitors after dark.
Unawatuna is the social beach area, where it's easy to meet people and eat alone. Stick to busy streets at night, and treat empty beaches and jungle paths as daytime-only.
Dalawella and Thalpe are quieter beach areas with cafes and villas. They're fine by day but spread out, so arrange transport at night.
Koggala is a quiet area for day trips, with a lake, a beach and a few cultural sites. It suits relaxed daytime outings but has little going on in the evening.
