Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Zurich

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Zurich.

About Zurich

  • Zurich sits where the Limmat River meets Lake Zurich. The city is famously punctual and organized - trains run on time, streets are clean, and you can drink from public fountains. It's consistently ranked as one of Europe's safest cities, though you'll pay for that security and efficiency.
  • The Swiss take punctuality seriously. Being late is considered rude. Most locals speak Swiss German but will switch to High German or English if needed. People are generally reserved rather than chatty. Sitting alone at cafes with a book or laptop is normal - you'll see locals doing the same.
  • The cost catches people off guard. Coffee runs 5-6 CHF, a basic lunch 20-25 CHF. Quality is high and public transport is reliable, but budget accordingly. The city feels genuinely safe at most hours, though you should still watch your belongings at busy spots like the main train station.
  • The Old Town has cobblestone streets and medieval buildings that feel preserved rather than rebuilt for tourists. The lakefront promenade gets joggers, swimmers in summer, and walkers year-round. Zurich West has the converted industrial spaces with creative energy, while Altstadt keeps things traditional.

Don't Learn These Lessons the Hard Way

Some mistakes you only make once in Zurich. But you shouldn't have to make them at all. This free checklist reveals the 5 safety pitfalls that catch solo women off guard — so you can avoid them before they happen.

Safe Areas
  • Altstadt (Old Town)
  • Seefeld
  • Enge
  • Zürichberg
  • Niederdorf
  • Bellevue area
  • Lake promenade
  • Zurich West (Kreis 5)
Areas to Avoid
  • Langstrasse late at night (though generally safe, more caution needed)
  • Main train station area late at night (pickpockets)
  • Parks and isolated areas after dark
  • Schwamendingen (District 12) - less relevant for tourists
Language & Communication

Swiss German is the local dialect, but most people speak High German and many speak excellent English, especially in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. The emergency services (112) have multilingual operators. English is widely understood in Zurich, making it very accessible for English-speaking travelers.

Cultural Tips
  • Punctuality matters here. Being five minutes late is considered rude. If you have a meeting or reservation, show up on time - not early, not late. This applies to everything from doctor appointments to casual coffee meetings.
  • Keep your voice down in public, especially on trams and trains. Loud phone calls and conversations stand out. The Swiss prefer quiet public spaces and you'll notice locals speak quietly even when it's crowded.
  • Dress tends toward smart-casual. You won't see many locals in sweatpants unless they're actually exercising. Neutral colors, well-fitted jeans, simple quality pieces. No strict dress codes at restaurants but overly casual or flashy clothing makes you stand out.
  • Tipping isn't required since service charges are already in the bill. Some people round up or leave 5-10% for good service. Don't tip at self-service places or for takeaway coffee.
Getting Around
  • Zurich's tram, bus, train, and boat network (ZVV) is efficient and runs on time. Single tickets start around CHF 2.80-4.60 depending on zones, with the city center being Zone 110. A 24-hour pass costs around CHF 9.20. Buy tickets from the ZVV app or machines before boarding - inspectors check regularly and fines are steep.
  • Trams run until around midnight on weekdays, later on weekends. Night buses (N-routes) cover the city after that. The system uses an honor system with no turnstiles, but fare dodging gets you a CHF 100+ fine if caught. Keep your ticket until you're done traveling.
  • The city center and lakefront are walkable. The lake promenade connects most neighborhoods. PubliBike stations are around but locals mostly walk or use public transport. Taxis and Uber exist but cost a lot (CHF 6-8 base plus CHF 3-4 per km) and aren't really necessary.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • June through September has the warmest weather (18-24°C / 64-75°F) and longest days, good for lake swimming and outdoor cafes. Expect tourist crowds and peak hotel prices during these months.
  • April-May and September-October have milder temperatures (12-18°C / 54-64°F) with fewer tourists and lower hotel rates. You'll get some rain but also spring flowers or autumn colors. Generally a good middle ground.
  • December through February is cold (0-5°C / 32-41°F) with occasional snow. Christmas markets run in December which draws crowds. Hotel rates drop except around New Year's and ski season weekends. The city functions fine in winter but days are short.
