About Edinburgh

  • Edinburgh is built on seven hills, so expect a lot of uphill walking. The Old Town sits on top with its medieval streets and narrow alleys (wynds), while the New Town spreads out below with wider Georgian streets. Most things are within a 20-minute walk, though those walks often involve hills and stairs.
  • People eat alone in cafes and restaurants without anyone thinking twice about it. English is spoken everywhere, but Scottish accents are thick and take some getting used to. The city has good police presence and violent crime is rare. Pickpocketing happens on the Royal Mile during busy times, particularly in August when the festival crowds arrive.
  • Public transport runs all night - buses and trams cover the whole city, though you can walk to most places from the center. Some neighborhoods like Stockbridge and New Town stay active late with decent street lighting and people around. The Old Town empties out after dark and the narrow medieval streets feel different once the tourists leave.

Language & Communication

English is spoken throughout Edinburgh. Scottish accents can be thick and take adjustment, but people are patient and will repeat themselves if needed. Emergency services (999) and police (101) operate in English, with text phone services available for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Cultural Tips
  • People are polite and take queuing seriously - say please and thank you, wait your turn. The local toast is 'Slàinte!' (pronounced slawn-cha). Tipping 10% in restaurants is appreciated but not expected like it is in North America.
  • Edinburgh is more reserved than other UK cities. People are helpful if you ask, but don't expect random conversations. Direct eye contact and a nod when passing people on quiet streets is normal.
  • Weather changes constantly - bring layers and a waterproof jacket even in summer. People dress practically, ranging from jeans to business clothes depending on the area. Nobody will care what you wear.
Getting Around
  • Walking works for most things - attractions are within 20 minutes of each other, though you'll be going up and down hills. The Old Town has the most stairs. Stockbridge to Morningside takes about an hour on foot.
  • Lothian Buses run 24/7. Pay with contactless or exact change, or use the Lothian App. Trams run every 7-10 minutes from the airport through New Town to Leith. Both buses and trams have low floors and wheelchair spaces.
  • Leith is 3 miles out - take the tram (20 minutes) instead of walking. Don't bother with a car in the city center. Parking is difficult and expensive, and you won't need it.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • May and June have the driest weather and reasonable crowds. Temperatures run 12-18°C (54-64°F). August is festival season - the whole city fills up, hotel prices triple, and you'll be navigating crowds everywhere you go. Only come in August if you specifically want the festivals.
  • September and October are cooler (10-15°C) with fewer people and lower prices. Winter (January-February) is cheap but cold, wet, and dark - sunset comes around 4pm.
