About Toronto

This page may contain affiliate links.

  • Toronto is Canada's biggest city with a mix of neighborhoods that each have their own character - Yorkville has expensive shops, Kensington Market has vintage stores and cheap food, the Distillery District is all old brick buildings turned into cafes and galleries. People here are generally polite and mind their own business.
  • English is the main language, though you'll hear everything as you walk around. The TTC subway and streetcar system gets you most places, but be aware that harassment on transit is an issue - a 2024 survey found 86% of riders have experienced it, though the city added more security in response.
  • Toronto is pricey compared to other Canadian cities. Eating alone is normal here - you'll see people reading or on laptops at restaurants all the time.
  • Most areas feel safe to walk around at night, with decent lighting in the main neighborhoods.

Language & Communication

English is the primary language spoken throughout Toronto. The city is extremely multicultural with over 180 languages spoken, but English proficiency is high across all neighborhoods. Emergency services (911) and city services (311) offer multilingual support in 180+ languages - just state your preferred language at the beginning of the call. Tourist areas, restaurants, and services all operate primarily in English.

Cultural Tips
  • Canadians apologize a lot - even when nothing is their fault. It's just how people talk here. Personal space matters, so expect people to keep their distance unless you're the one striking up conversation. Tip 15-20% at restaurants, cafes, and bars - it's expected, not optional.
  • Eating alone is normal. Bring a book or laptop and nobody cares. Staff won't make it weird. Some places have bar seating or smaller portions that work well if you're on your own.
  • The city is very multicultural - you'll hear tons of languages. Dress is casual most places, except fancier spots in Yorkville or the Financial District. Tank tops and shorts are fine in summer. People communicate directly but politely.
Getting Around
  • The TTC subway has four lines that cover most of the city. A ride costs $3.35 CAD with a PRESTO card. It's reasonably safe during the day and evening, though harassment is common - an 86% rate according to surveys. The city added more security in 2024-2025.
  • Streetcars run along major streets like Queen, King, and Dundas. They're scenic but get packed during rush hour. The 501 Queen goes through a bunch of neighborhoods from The Beaches to Liberty Village.
  • Uber and Lyft are available and fine for late nights, but prices spike during busy times. Regular taxis work too. Walking is good in neighborhoods like Yorkville, The Beaches, and Queen West during the day and early evening.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • Late April to May and September to October have decent weather (15-25°C/59-77°F) without the summer crowds or high prices.
  • Summer (June-August) is when most tourists come - it's warm around 25°C (77°F) but humid and everything costs more. Fall foliage looks good in mid-October.
  • Winter (December-February) is cold - often below freezing with a lot of snow - but the city functions normally and there's an underground PATH system connecting downtown buildings if you need to avoid the cold.
