About Ho Chi Minh City

  • Ho Chi Minh City (many locals still call it Saigon) is Vietnam's commercial center. The most noticeable thing when you arrive is the motorbikes - millions of them, constantly weaving through traffic. It takes a day or two to get used to crossing the street.
  • The central tourist area is District 1, where most people stay. English is common enough in hotels and restaurants that you can get by, though it drops off quickly outside the main areas. Grab works well here for safe transportation with upfront pricing.
  • The street food is good and generally safe if you stick to busy stalls. Bag snatching from motorbikes is the main safety concern - keep bags across your body and toward the building side of the sidewalk.
  • District 1 and parts of District 3 are walkable during the day. For something quieter, Thao Dien across the river has an expat community with cafes and tree-lined streets, though you'll need to Grab everywhere from there.

Language & Communication

Vietnamese is the main language. English is common in District 1, tourist areas, and upscale restaurants. The emergency service (115) may have English-speaking operators. Tourist police and hotels can help translate in emergencies. Google Translate is helpful.

Cultural Tips
  • Cover shoulders and knees when visiting temples. Local Vietnamese women dress conservatively outside tourist areas - tank tops and shorts are fine in District 1 but you'll get stares in residential neighborhoods.
  • Take off shoes before entering temples, homes, and some restaurants. Watch what locals do. Don't point your feet at people or religious objects.
  • Learn a few basic phrases - 'xin chào' (hello), 'cảm ơn' (thank you), 'xin lỗi' (sorry). Pointing at menu items works in local places. Keep Google Translate handy.
  • Keep your voice down in restaurants and avoid public displays of affection. Haggling is normal at markets. Tipping isn't expected but appreciated in tourist restaurants.
Getting Around
  • Grab is the standard way to get around - works like Uber with upfront pricing. You can get cars (GrabCar) or motorbike rides (GrabBike). GrabBike is faster in traffic if you're okay riding on the back of a motorbike. Set up the app before you arrive.
  • Regular taxis exist but stick to Vinasun (white cars) or Mai Linh (green cars) to avoid meter scams. Don't take unmarked taxis or ones with broken meters.
  • The new Metro Line 1 opened in December 2024 connecting Ben Thanh Market to outer areas. Buses are cheap but confusing and slow in traffic. District 1 is walkable during the day. To cross streets, walk slowly and steadily - motorbikes will flow around you if you're predictable.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • December to February is the best weather - around 80°F with lower humidity and almost no rain.
  • March and April are hotter but still dry.
  • May through November is rainy season with downpours most afternoons, though they usually clear up after an hour or two. Prices drop during rainy season if you're on a budget.
  • Avoid Tet (Lunar New Year, usually late January or early February) unless you want to see the celebrations - most businesses close and the city empties out for several days.
