About Denpasar

  • Denpasar is Bali's capital, though most people use it as a transit point to the beach areas rather than staying in the city itself. The urban center is chaotic - heavy traffic, crowded markets, and not much English spoken outside tourist zones. You'll want Google Translate downloaded.
  • Most travelers base themselves in Sanur, Seminyak, or Canggu and just pass through Denpasar when needed. The beach towns are 20-40 minutes away by Grab or Gojek (rides cost $2-5).
  • Denpasar proper gives you a look at actual Indonesian daily life - markets, local food stalls, people commuting on scooters - but it's not particularly set up for tourists. The expat-heavy beach areas feel safer and more manageable than the city center.
  • It's hot and humid year-round (80-90°F), slightly less miserable during the dry season from May to October. Tourist Police can be reached at 0361 754 599 if you need English-speaking help.

  • Canggu
  • Ubud (outside Denpasar but accessible)
Areas to Avoid

  • Poorly lit back streets at night
  • Isolated beach areas after sunset
Language & Communication

Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia). English works in tourist areas (Seminyak, Sanur, Ubud) and with Tourist Police (0361 754 599). Emergency line (112) may have English operators. Almost no English outside tourist zones - download translation apps.

Cultural Tips
  • Cover shoulders and knees at temples - they usually provide sarongs at the entrance. Don't enter temples during menstruation, it's considered culturally inappropriate in Balinese Hindu tradition. Beach clothes are fine at the beach, but cover up when you leave.
  • Almost no English outside tourist zones. Learn 'terima kasih' (thank you), 'tolong' (please/help), 'maaf' (sorry). Download Google Translate offline before you go.
  • Don't point your feet at people or altars. Take shoes off before entering temples and most homes. Keep public affection minimal and voices down.
  • Bargain at markets (start at 50-60% of asking price), but not in malls or restaurants. Local warungs have fixed prices and cost $2-4 for a meal.
Getting Around
  • Use Grab or Gojek apps for rides - they're safe, cheap ($2-5 for most trips), and GPS-tracked. Download both since coverage varies. They work fine in the beach areas and Denpasar, less reliable in Ubud.
  • Blue Bird taxis are the only legitimate taxi company with meters. They have an app too. Watch out for fake blue taxis - real ones say 'Bluebird' clearly on the side. Don't get in unmarked blue cars.
  • Don't flag down random taxis on the street - scams are common. If you do, insist on the meter or agree on price first. At the airport, use the official Grab pickup area or book Blue Bird ahead.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

  • For shorter trips, VisitorsCoverage is a good option.
  • For long-term travel or remote work, we recommend Ekta.
Best Time to Visit
  • May, June, September, and October are your best bet - still dry but less crowded and cheaper than July-August when everyone comes.
  • Dry season is April to October, but July-August bring peak crowds and inflated prices for everything. It's hot year-round (80-90°F), just slightly less humid during dry months.
  • Rainy season runs November to March with daily afternoon downpours, though mornings usually stay clear. The 2024-2025 rainy season was wetter than usual, so dry months make things easier.
  • Expect heat and humidity whenever you come.
