What to Say When Things Feel Off

About Cali

This page may contain affiliate links.

  • Cali sits at 3,300 feet elevation in southwest Colombia. The city calls itself the world capital of salsa - you'll hear music coming from shops, buses, and dance academies all over town. There are over 100 salsa schools teaching the local style (salsa caleña), which is faster and involves more footwork than what you might know from elsewhere.
  • The city has a stark safety divide. Western neighborhoods like Granada, San Antonio, and Ciudad Jardín are reasonably safe. Eastern areas like Aguablanca and Siloé have high crime rates and you shouldn't go there. San Antonio is the historic district where most backpackers stay - cobblestone streets, cafes, colonial buildings. Granada is the upscale area with restaurants and rooftop bars. Parque del Perro is where students drink cheaply.
  • Safety improved somewhat in early 2025 when the new administration added more police, but Cali is still Colombia's most dangerous major city - the murder rate is twice that of Bogotá or Medellín. There was a bomb near an Air Force base in August 2025. Stick to tourist areas, use Uber or InDriver instead of street taxis, and don't walk around alone at night.
  • English is rare outside the tourist zones in San Antonio and Granada. The MIO bus costs about 3,000 COP per ride. They added police officers to the buses in 2025 but pickpocketing is still an issue during rush hour. The heat (75-90°F year-round) is more intense than Bogotá's cooler climate. Machismo is noticeable - you'll deal with catcalling and some harassment, especially in bars and clubs.

  • San Antonio
  • Granada
  • El Peñón
  • Ciudad Jardín
  • Versalles
  • North Cali (Cali Norte)
  • San Fernando (around Parque del Perro during busy hours)
  • Santa Teresita
  • Centenario
Areas to Avoid
  • Aguablanca (Comunas 13, 14, 15) - entire district
  • Siloé
  • El Vergel (Comuna 13)
  • Terrón Colorado
  • Downtown/Centro after dark
  • Any eastern neighborhoods

Language & Communication

Spanish is the main language. Very little English outside tourist areas in San Antonio and Granada, and upscale restaurants. The emergency service (123) has some English-speaking operators. Basic Spanish phrases are essential for getting around.

Cultural Tips
  • Salsa is central to Cali's identity. There are over 100 dance schools around town that welcome beginners. The local style (salsa caleña) is faster with more footwork than styles from other places.
  • Machismo is noticeable in Cali. Expect catcalling and some harassment, especially in bars and clubs. Be polite to people but don't engage with street harassment. The heat requires lighter clothing, but going too casual can draw more attention.
  • English is rare outside tourist spots in Granada and San Antonio. Learn basic Spanish: 'hola', 'gracias', 'por favor', 'la cuenta' (the check). The phrase 'no des papaya' means don't make yourself an easy target - locals use it as safety advice about not showing valuables. Google Translate helps.
  • People in Cali are generally friendly, but safety is a real issue. Don't discuss religion or politics, trust your instincts, and be more cautious at night than you would in Bogotá or Medellín.
Getting Around
  • The MIO bus system has dedicated lanes and costs about 3,000 COP per ride. They added 150 police officers in 2025 but pickpocketing still happens during rush hour. Keep windows closed - thieves reach in from outside when buses stop. Hold your bag close during crowded times.
  • Uber and InDriver are safer than street taxis. Both work fine in Cali. Some people sit in the front seat to be less obvious. Confirm the driver's name before getting in. Don't hail taxis off the street - if you need one, have your hotel or restaurant call it.
  • San Antonio, Granada, and El Peñón are walkable during the day. It's hot (75-90°F) so bring water. After dark, take Uber even for short distances. The difference between safe western neighborhoods and dangerous eastern areas is sharp.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • June to August is driest, with temps around 75-86°F (24-30°C). July has local holidays so it's more crowded. December to February is also relatively dry, and late December has the Feria de Cali.
  • March to May and September to November are rainy months. Expect heavy afternoon showers that make getting around harder. The city is hot and humid all year, not like Bogotá's cooler temperatures.
  • The Feria de Cali in late December is a week-long salsa festival that brings in dancers from around the world. There's also an annual World Salsa Festival with competitions and workshops. Hotels fill up fast during these events.
