What to Say When Things Feel Off

About Tallinn

This page may contain affiliate links.

  • Tallinn is Estonia's capital with a well-preserved medieval Old Town that's a UNESCO World Heritage site. The historic center is small - about 2.6 square kilometers - so you can walk most places. Outside the Old Town, neighborhoods like Kalamaja have a more modern, creative vibe with cafes and converted industrial spaces.
  • Cafe culture here is low-key. Sitting alone with a laptop or book for hours is normal, and you won't get weird looks for eating alone. Most people under 40 speak English well, especially in tourist areas. Older locals may not, so knowing 'Tere' (hello) and 'Aitäh' (thank you) helps.
  • For emergencies, call 112 for police, ambulance, or fire - operators speak English. Estonia has low crime rates compared to most of Europe. Street harassment is rare. People tend to be reserved and keep to themselves.
  • Public transport is reliable - trams and buses cover the city. Uber and Bolt both operate here and are useful for late nights. The Old Town and Kalamaja have decent lighting and foot traffic in the evenings.

Language & Communication

Estonian is the main language. Most younger people in Tallinn speak English well, especially in tourist areas, restaurants, and shops. Emergency services (112) have English-speaking operators. Older people often don't speak much English, so learning basic Estonian phrases helps.

Cultural Tips
  • Estonians are reserved and value personal space. They speak quietly and don't do much small talk with strangers. This isn't unfriendliness, just the local style. Direct eye contact and firm handshakes are normal when meeting people.
  • Most younger people in Tallinn speak English well, but older generations often don't. Learning basic phrases helps: 'Tere' (hello), 'Aitäh' (thank you), 'Palun' (please). People expect punctuality - show up on time.
  • If someone invites you home, bring flowers in odd numbers (avoid white ones - those are for funerals) or chocolates. Take off your shoes at the door. Wait to be offered a tour rather than asking. Eating alone is normal here - you'll see locals doing it all the time.
Getting Around
  • Public transport (trams, buses, trolleybuses) covers most areas and costs around €2 per ride. The system is reliable and safe. New trolleybuses were added in 2026. Crime on public transport is rare.
  • Uber and Bolt (a local ride-sharing app) both work in Tallinn and are good options for late-night transport. Base fare is around €1.90 plus €0.40 per kilometer. Use the apps rather than flagging down random taxis. Some companies add a 50% surcharge between midnight and 6am.
  • The Old Town and main sights are close together and walkable. The medieval center is small enough to cover on foot. Streets in tourist areas have good lighting. Walking at night in central areas is generally safe.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

Best Time to Visit
  • June to August has the warmest weather, around 60-75°F (15-24°C). During summer solstice the sun barely sets - it stays light until nearly midnight, which is interesting but can mess with your sleep schedule.
  • July is warmest at around 21°C, but also the most crowded and expensive for accommodation. June gets about 10 hours of sun daily with fewer tourists competing for hotel rooms.
  • December has Christmas markets if that's your thing, but days are very short with limited daylight. April and May bring spring weather (40-60°F / 5-15°C) with fewer tourists around.
