Don't Make These 5 Mistakes in Phuket

What 90% of solo women don't know about staying safe in Phuket.

About Phuket

This page may contain affiliate links.

  • Phuket is Thailand's largest island. The west coast has the main beaches - everything from Patong's packed party scene to quieter spots like Nai Harn. Old Town on the east side has Sino-Portuguese buildings and no beach access. Each area feels separate, so where you stay matters.
  • Generally safe for solo travelers. Most tourist areas have English speakers, though you'll want basic Thai phrases for local restaurants. Tourist police (1155) run 24/7 with multilingual support. Thai people are usually friendly, and eating alone doesn't draw attention in tourist zones.
  • Use Grab or Bolt for rides - they have set prices and tracking. Regular tuk-tuks and taxis will try to overcharge. Violent crime is rare, but watch your stuff in crowds and don't leave drinks unattended in Patong bars - drink spiking gets reported there.
  • The island's spread out. Kata and Karon have beaches and restaurants, Old Town has culture and cafes but no swimming, Kamala and Nai Harn are quiet. You'll need rides between areas - distances are too far to walk.

Don't Learn These Lessons the Hard Way

Some mistakes you only make once in Phuket. But you shouldn't have to make them at all. This free checklist reveals the 5 safety pitfalls that catch solo women off guard — so you can avoid them before they happen.

Safe Areas
  • Kata Beach
  • Karon Beach
  • Phuket Old Town
  • Kamala Beach
  • Bang Tao/Laguna Area
  • Nai Harn Beach
  • Rawai
Areas to Avoid
  • Soi Bangla late at night (Patong)
  • Prompthep Cape (muggings reported)
  • Road from Kata Viewpoint to Nai Harn (late at night)
  • Sapan Hin (late at night)
  • Pru Mai Khao forest (isolated, no surveillance)
  • Deserted beaches after dark
Language & Communication

Thai is the main language. English is common in tourist areas like Patong, Kata, Karon, and Old Town. Tourist Police (1155) have multilingual support 24/7. Medical emergency services (1669) and tourist police can usually speak English.

Cultural Tips
  • Cover shoulders and knees for temples or when you leave beach areas. Bikinis are fine on the beach but topless sunbathing isn't. Put on shorts and a shirt when walking to restaurants or shops from the beach.
  • The wai (hands together, slight bow) is the greeting here. Don't touch people's heads - it's considered sacred. Don't point your feet at Buddha statues or people - feet are considered the lowest part spiritually.
  • Keep physical affection minimal in public. Women can't touch monks. Take your shoes off before entering temples or homes. Most locals outside tourist zones speak limited English - Google Translate helps.
  • Thais avoid confrontation. Raising your voice or showing anger is seen as bad behavior. The Thai smile doesn't always mean what you think - sometimes it's just to avoid awkwardness or conflict.
Getting Around
  • Use Grab or Bolt - you get the price upfront and can track the ride. As of 2026, Grab works at the airport now, which saves 200-300 baht over official taxis. InDrive works too.
  • The Smart Bus goes from the airport to Rawai Beach along the west coast, 50-170 baht depending how far you go. Only real public transport. Blue songthaews (local buses) run from Phuket Town to beaches for 30-50 baht but only 6am-6pm.
  • Metered taxis exist but aren't common. Make them turn the meter on. Tuk-tuks work for short rides but they're expensive - agree on price before you get in. Scooter rental is popular but traffic accidents send a lot of tourists to the hospital, so only if you really know how to ride.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

  • For long-term travel or remote work, we recommend Ekta.
Best Time to Visit
  • November to April is dry season - sunshine, calm water, 77-90°F (25-32°C). December through February has the best weather but also peak prices and the most tourists.
  • May to October is monsoon season. Heavy rain, rough seas, some beaches close. September and early October are the worst for rain. Hotels are cheaper though.
  • March and November are in-between. March still has good weather with fewer people around. November is when the rain stops and everything gets green again - prices haven't hit peak season yet.
